Liia Hänni is a physicist by education and holds a Ph.D. degree. She spent 20 years working in the field of science, conducting research in astrophysics. In the early 1990s, during the revolutionary events in Estonia, Liia became actively engaged in politics. She served as a Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister, with responsibilities encompassing property reform. Concluding her political career in 2003, Liia embarked on a journey with the NGO e-Governance Academy, advocating for the utilization of ICT for democratic governance and the empowerment of citizens. She considers online voting, which has been in use in Estonia since 2005, to be a citizen-centric e-service in democracy that, in addition to technological reliability, requires societal trust.
