Taimar Ala has served as the Director General of the Estonian Environment Agency since 2015 and is an experienced leader in the fields of environmental management and nature conservation. He has previously held senior positions at the Environmental Board and the Ministry of the Environment, contributing actively to the development of nature protection and environmental policy both in Estonia and internationally.
The Estonian Environment Agency is an independent assessor of the state of the environment, providing reliable environmental, weather, and climate services. Its activities range from extensive environmental monitoring and biodiversity assessments to real-time aviation meteorology. The agency is also responsible for the most accurate weather forecasts in Estonia. Under Taimar Ala’s leadership, the agency has significantly advanced science-based data platforms, promoted open data and digitalisation, and supported cooperation between stakeholders for more informed environmental management.
Taimar holds master’s degrees from Tallinn University of Technology (technology) and the University of Tartu (environmental technology).
